Discovering Canada’s National Horse

Welcome to Heritage Canadians, owned and operated by Barry and Deirdre Pickerell. We discovered Canadian horses in the spring of 2002 and quickly realized this was the breed for us. We knew we wanted to raise and show a rarer or more unique type of horse and were thrilled when we were introduced to The Canadian. Like so many people, we had no idea this breed existed but our love for them quickly grew and we are proud to be helping to promote and preserve Canada’s National Horse.

Getting Started

When we first discovered Canadians, there were very few older, trained horses available; we had no choice but to “buy babies” and start right from the beginning. A scenario many new to the breed may find themselves in. The Canadian is a critically endangered breed, therefore, there are not a lot of animals to choose from. If you are interested in buying a Canadian, we strongly recommend you review So You are Looking to Buy a Canadian on the Cherry Creek Canadians website

Connecting with the Community

We are very active in the Canadian Horse community. We are members of the Canadian Horse Heritage and Preservation Society and the Canadian Horse Breeders Association, with Deirdre serving a term on the Board of Directors (2020-2022). In 2015, we co-founded the Canadian Horse Rescue and Re-Homing Society, whose goal is to help rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home Canadian horses. Generally these animals are found at auction, too often destined for slaughter; the society also helps owners needing to sell or place their horses at other farms – regardless of the reason.
